What the Giving Season Has Meant to Me at KCT

When I think about the giving season, I don’t just think about holidays or gifts. I think about people. For me, the holidays have always been tied to Kids Coming Together and the sense of community it creates.

My name is Mira Asvin, and I’m a junior at Eastlake High School. I’ve been involved with Kids Coming Together since 2019. Over the years, I’ve been on the Events team for two years, and this year I’m part of Operations. Being involved in different roles has given me the chance to see KCT from many perspectives. No matter the role, one thing has always stayed the same — KCT is about bringing people together in meaningful ways.

Some of my favorite KCT memories come from events during the holiday season. Whether it was helping plan events, volunteering as a high school leader, or just being in a room full of kids and teens collaborating to give back to the community, those moments always felt special. One of my favorite events was Senior Bingo during the holiday season my freshman year, because the festive atmosphere made it feel even more special. The decorations and holiday spirit created a warm and welcoming environment where everyone could connect, laugh, and feel a sense of community. It really showed me how KCT events can make the giving season feel meaningful for both participants and volunteers.

A few years ago, we also created hot cocoa packs and cards for Tent City 3 in Seattle, which may seem small, but meant a lot to the people receiving them. Being part of that effort showed me that giving back doesn’t have to be big to make an impact, especially during the holiday season.

One thing I’ve always loved about KCT holiday events is the community aspect. I’ve watched kids walk into events not knowing anyone and leave with new connections made. I’ve seen high school students step into leadership roles, guiding younger kids and creating spaces that feel welcoming and safe.

What stands out to me most is how KCT brings people together across ages and experiences. Whether it’s a craft event, a game night, or a holiday activity, the focus is always on connection. That sense of belonging is what keeps people coming back, and it’s what has kept me involved for so many years.

Looking back, my favorite holiday memories with KCT aren’t about one specific activity. They’re about the feeling of being part of something bigger, surrounded by people who care. During the giving season, that sense of community is what truly matters, and it’s what KCT continues to create every year.
